The College of New Jersey
STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN

2023-2024 Academic Year

Health Insurance Requirement

Pursuant to New Jersey law, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) is required to offer Student Health Insurance coverage to its full-time students. TCNJ meets the requirements of the state law by offering a Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) to its full-time students. Full-time students are automatically billed for the full amount of the insurance on their term bill by the Office of Student Accounts. Full-time students have the opportunity to waive/opt out of this coverage by providing evidence of health insurance coverage to the insurance company by the waiver deadlines established by TCNJ.

Insurance Cost & Coverage Periods

The student insurance plan is insured by Aetna Student Health and provides national coverage through their national PPO network. Students do not have to select a primary care physician and referrals are not required.  In order to keep the premium competitive, the following benefit changes were made: Deductible increased to $500 preferred care/$1,000 non-preferred care.

Undergraduates & Graduates Annual NEW Spring/Summer
Coverage Dates 8/1/2023-7/31/2024   1/15/2024-7/31/2024
Insurance Cost  $2,611 $1,420
Deadline 9/22/2023 2/19/2024

The waiver appeal deadline for NEW Spring 2024 students is March 8, 2024.

Waiver & Enrollment Process

Full-time students must either confirm enrollment in the SHIP or submit a waiver providing evidence of other comparable health insurance. NEW Spring students who do not confirm enrollment in the SHIP or submit a waiver form by February 19, 2024 will be enrolled in the SHIP and responsible for payment of the premium. Using the plan obligates you to pay the full amount and you will not be able to waive enrollment in SHIP.

Please note that being automatically billed is not the same as confirming enrollment in the SHIP; you still need to take action by confirming your enrollment in order to utilize the plan coverage prior to the waiver and enrollment deadline date of February 19, 2024. Failure to take the necessary steps to confirm enrollment does not eliminate responsibility for payment.

It is important that you read the SHIP Benefit Information linked in the left-hand side navigation menu located on this webpage. You need to understand the co-payment, co-insurance, deductible levels and other plan requirements. This is YOUR health insurance plan and any costs associated with it are your responsibility and not the College’s.

Important note about the waiver and enrollment process: The SHIP waiver/enrollment process is separate from TCNJ pre-entrance health requirements. The process you may have completed earlier this summer relating to submission of information via OWL and paperwork to Student Health Services does not suffice for waiving student health insurance. You will need to complete the online waiver form located in the left-hand side navigation menu on this webpage to waive the SHIP.

Qualifying Event Enrollment

Students who waive coverage can only request to enroll in SHIP after the waiver and enrollment deadline date if there has been a life status change in which they involuntarily lose coverage under their original plan (examples: marriage, divorce, loss of job, etc.). There are time limits on eligibility and additional actions that you will be required to take. Please contact Student Accounts immediately if you have a life status change and require health insurance coverage.
